Theory

Ontario Conservatory of Music offers a certified Theory course to complement your practical music program.

Over and above your regular music studies, certified conservatory programs have prerequisite Theory programs that are written in conjunction with your current program.

Unfortunately, through our In-studio assessment program design for students that have taken lessons outside Ontario Conservatory of Music, we evaluate students that have studied at a retail store or similar school, some time for several years, and can barely read music due being taught by ear. In some cases students evaluated know portions of the theory for the songs they were taught, but not the rest of the theory for all other material in the level they studied, that the teacher did not cover. You must study the minimum Theory requirements for each grade level you are in.

Why is this important?

Students of Ontario Conservatory of Music that follow our music program counselling are certified when completing there music studies. If you qualify, this can provide an additional credit in high school, or in most cases ensure when you complete your music studies, you are qualified to teach. This is an invaluable bonus of studying with our organization. Countless students who follow our program, become assistant teachers and supplement there own studies, or University studies by teaching.

We offer all grades of theoretical studies under one roof. Ontario Conservatory of Music’s theory classes include ear training, dictation, interval and chord recognition, and keyboard harmony as required as a co-requisite to completion of practical examinations from grades 5 to 10.

The study of theory is a valuable and necessary for the student who wishes to achieve a high school educational credit, gain admittance into a post-secondary institution for music, and for students who wish to pursue a career in performance or music instruction.
